Why does Saturn weather look like an 8-bit video game?

Weather is supposed to be swirly, right?


Look at a hurricane from space and you’ll see great sweeping bands of clouds curling around an eye. Thunderstorms bubble and billow. Even Jupiter’s Great Red Spot is basically an enormous oval.


Then there’s Saturn.


For decades, scientists have known about a gigantic six-sided weather pattern around Saturn’s north pole. Now they’ve discovered another geometric surprise at the opposite end of the planet: a huge 10-sided pattern around the south pole.


Seriously. Saturn’s weather sometimes looks less like something made by nature and more like somebody built it in Minecraft.


Is Saturn weather really shaped like polygons?


Yes, but Saturn isn’t producing individual hexagon-shaped or 10-sided clouds.


The famous northern hexagon is an enormous wavy jet stream. Clouds and storms are carried along by the atmospheric flow, and inside that geometric boundary you’ll still find plenty of the curls, swirls and vortices you’d expect from weather.


That’s what makes the pictures so bizarre. The clouds themselves can look beautifully chaotic, while the enormous atmospheric system containing them maintains surprisingly straight-looking sides.


Nature usually draws weather with curves.


Saturn sometimes draws it with straight lines.


What did scientists just discover?


Scientists studying Hubble Space Telescope observations from 2023 identified a huge decagon, a 10-sided wave pattern, in ammonia-rich clouds surrounding Saturn’s south pole.


Researchers believe the feature may have developed sometime between 2017 and 2023, when the south polar region was difficult to observe from Earth.


And we’re not talking about some tiny atmospheric curiosity. Just one side of this 10-sided pattern stretches more than 10,000 miles.


Saturn apparently doesn’t do geometry on a small scale.

How big is Saturn’s famous hexagon?


The six-sided pattern at Saturn’s north pole is even more famous.


Voyager spacecraft first spotted it in the early 1980s, and NASA’s Cassini spacecraft later returned spectacular close-up images. The hexagon spans roughly 20,000 miles across, with winds around 200 mph.


Even more remarkable is its staying power. Scientists have watched this enormous geometric weather system persist for decades.


Imagine a jet stream on Earth somehow arranging itself into a giant hexagon and then staying recognizable for generations.


Yeah. We’d probably talk about that one on the Weather Channel.


Why does Saturn weather make shapes?


Here’s where things get wonderfully nerdy.


Fluids don’t always behave the way our eyes expect. Under the right conditions, rotating fluids can naturally organize themselves into geometric patterns. Scientists have demonstrated similar effects in laboratory experiments using rapidly rotating tanks of liquid.


Change the conditions, and the flowing liquid can produce polygons, including squares, hexagons and other shapes.


Saturn gives that physics an extraordinary planetary playground. Unlike Earth, it doesn’t have continents, mountain ranges or a solid surface underneath its weather constantly disrupting atmospheric flow. Saturn’s enormous atmosphere allows powerful jet streams and waves to organize themselves on scales that are difficult to imagine here.


Do scientists completely understand Saturn’s polygons?


No, and that’s arguably the best part.


Saturn’s northern hexagon is remarkably stable and nearly stationary. The newly identified southern decagon appears to behave differently, including slowly drifting around the pole.


Now scientists have two enormous polygonal atmospheric systems at opposite ends of the same planet to compare, which could help them understand why these strange patterns form and why some survive so long.


And maybe that’s the coolest thing about Saturn’s strange weather.


From a distance, its clouds can look almost artificial. Like pixels. Like Minecraft. Like somebody forgot that weather is supposed to have curves.


But there’s no programmer drawing those lines.


It’s just an atmosphere following the laws of physics so perfectly that, every once in a while, nature starts drawing geometry.
