Can you really count how far away lightning is by the thunder?
Yes. Counting the seconds between a flash of lightning and the sound of thunder is a surprisingly accurate way to estimate how far away a lightning strike is. But like many weather rules, it isn’t perfect. There are times when it works remarkably well… and times when it can fool you.
Understanding why will not only make you a better weather observer, it could also help you know when a storm is getting dangerously close.
Why do you see lightning before you hear thunder?
The answer comes down to one simple fact: light travels much faster than sound.
Light races through the atmosphere at about 186,000 miles per second. For anything happening inside a thunderstorm, the flash reaches your eyes almost instantly.
Thunder is much slower.
It’s the sound created when lightning superheats the air to around 50,000°F, causing the air to expand explosively. That sound travels at only about 767 miles per hour, or roughly one mile every five seconds.
That’s why there’s a delay between the flash and the rumble.
But does that really mean five seconds always equals one mile?

Most of the time, yes.
If you count five seconds between the flash and the thunder, the lightning struck about one mile away. Ten seconds is about two miles. Fifteen seconds is about three miles.
It’s a surprisingly accurate rule of thumb.
The exact speed of sound changes slightly with air temperature, so the calculation isn’t perfect. On a very hot summer day, sound travels a little faster than on a cold winter day.
Fortunately, the difference is small enough that the old “five seconds equals one mile” rule works very well for estimating the distance to most lightning strikes.
So if it’s that accurate, why does it sometimes seem completely wrong?
When can counting lightning and thunder fool you?
This is where things get interesting.
Lightning isn’t always a single straight bolt. Some lightning channels stretch for several miles across the sky, and different parts of that channel create thunder that reaches you at different times.
That’s one reason thunder sometimes begins with a sharp crack before fading into a long rumble.
It also gets confusing when several lightning bolts occur close together. You might accidentally count the thunder from one strike after watching a completely different flash.
When storms become more active, it’s surprisingly easy to pair the wrong flash with the wrong rumble.
So if you can’t always trust the exact distance, what can counting still tell you?
Can you tell if the storm is getting closer?
Absolutely.
Suppose you count 20 seconds between the flash and the thunder. A few minutes later, you count only 10 seconds.
That tells you the storm is moving closer.
If the number keeps getting larger instead, the storm is moving away.
You don’t need perfect math. Watching whether the time is shrinking or growing is often more useful than knowing the exact distance.
That leads to the most important question of all.
What’s the safest number to remember?
Here’s the takeaway that matters most.
If you can hear thunder, you’re close enough to be struck by lightning.
Lightning has been known to strike 10 miles or more away from the main thunderstorm.
That’s why people are sometimes caught off guard even when it isn’t raining overhead.
The safest place during a thunderstorm is inside a substantial building or a fully enclosed vehicle.
Once you’re there, stay inside until at least 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder.
The next time lightning flashes across the sky, don’t just admire the show.
Count.
Those few seconds aren’t just a childhood game. They’re giving you a surprisingly good estimate of how far away one of nature’s most powerful forces really is.
