Can corn sweat really make it feel hotter outside?
Yes. Corn really can make hot summer days feel even more humid. Every summer, billions of corn plants release water vapor into the air through a natural process called transpiration. When millions of acres of corn are doing it at the same time, meteorologists often call it “corn sweat.”
If you’ve ever stepped out of your car on a July afternoon in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, or Missouri and felt like someone threw a warm, wet blanket over you, a nearby cornfield may have been part of the reason.
Why does corn “sweat” in the first place?
Corn isn’t sweating the way people do.
Instead, it pulls water from the soil through its roots. Most of that water isn’t used to grow leaves or produce ears of corn. It eventually escapes through tiny openings in the leaves called stomata as invisible water vapor.
Think of each corn plant as a tiny natural humidifier.
One plant doesn’t make much difference. But when you have billions of plants spread across thousands of square miles, those tiny puffs of moisture begin to add up.
Which raises an even bigger question.
Can an entire cornfield change the weather?
Surprisingly, yes.
A healthy cornfield can release astonishing amounts of water into the atmosphere during the peak of summer. Researchers have found that large agricultural regions can noticeably increase humidity, especially during July when corn is tall, healthy, and growing rapidly.
Meteorologists have even observed what they call the Corn Belt Humidity Effect, where vast stretches of corn contribute to higher dew points across parts of the Midwest.
That doesn’t mean corn causes every sticky summer day.
But it can make naturally humid weather feel even more oppressive.
Why does extra humidity make us feel so miserable?
Your body cools itself by evaporating sweat from your skin.
When the air is already loaded with moisture, sweat evaporates much more slowly.
Instead of carrying heat away, it stays on your skin, making you feel hotter than the thermometer suggests.
That’s why weather forecasts often talk about the heat index instead of just the air temperature.
A temperature of 92 degrees with very high humidity can feel more like 105 degrees.
Some of that humidity may have started its journey inside a corn plant just a few hours earlier.
Is corn the only plant that does this?
Not at all.
Every green plant releases water vapor through transpiration.
Forests do it. Lawns do it. Even the tree shading your backyard is quietly adding moisture to the air.
Corn simply does it on an enormous scale because so much of it is growing at the same time across the Midwest. During peak growing season, the Corn Belt contains tens of millions of acres of nearly continuous cornfields, all releasing moisture together.
That’s what makes “corn sweat” such a remarkable weather story.
