Why does thunder sound different? Why some storms go BOOM while others keep rumbling.

When the lightning is nearby, much of that shock wave reaches your ears almost all at once.


The result?


A sharp, explosive crack or BOOM that can rattle windows and make you jump.


But then there are those storms that seem to rumble forever.

Why does thunder sometimes just keep rumbling?


Because you’re not hearing the entire lightning bolt all at once.


A single bolt of lightning can stretch for several miles through the sky. The sound from the nearest part reaches your ears first, while the sound from the far end arrives a few seconds later.


Your brain blends all of those sounds together.


The result is that long, rolling rumble that seems to go on forever.


But the lightning channel is only part of the story.


Does the atmosphere change how thunder sounds?


Absolutely.


Temperature, humidity, wind, hills, buildings, and even low clouds can bend, reflect, and scatter sound waves before they reach your ears.


Sometimes thunder echoes.


Sometimes it sounds muffled.


Sometimes it rolls for several seconds longer than you’d expect.


The atmosphere is constantly changing the sound between the lightning and you.


But here’s another myth almost everyone gets wrong.


Does louder thunder mean a stronger storm?


Not necessarily.


Loud thunder usually means the lightning was closer, not that the storm itself was stronger.


A fairly ordinary thunderstorm can produce an ear-splitting BOOM if lightning strikes nearby.


Meanwhile, an intense storm several miles away may produce nothing more than a distant rumble.


So if thunder tells you lightning is nearby, what should you do?


If you can hear thunder, are you close enough to be struck?


Yes.


If you can hear thunder, lightning is close enough to be dangerous.


That’s why meteorologists say:


When thunder roars, go indoors.


Move inside a substantial building or a hard-topped vehicle, and wait at least 30 minutes after the last rumble before heading back outside.


Thunder isn’t just making noise.


It’s warning you that lightning is already close enough to pose a threat.

Can you really estimate how far away lightning is?


Yes.


A good rule of thumb is to count the seconds between the flash of lightning and the sound of thunder. Divide that number by five, and you’ll have a rough estimate of the distance in miles.


For example, if you count 10 seconds, the lightning struck about 2 miles away. If you only reach 5 seconds, it’s roughly 1 mile away.


It’s not perfect, but it’s surprisingly accurate because sound travels through air at about one mile every five seconds.


And remember, if you can hear thunder at all, lightning is already close enough to be dangerous.
