How can the Moon completely cover the Sun?


Here’s the amazing part.


The Sun is about 400 times wider than the Moon.


It’s also about 400 times farther away.


Those two numbers create one of the most remarkable coincidences in nature. From Earth, the Sun and Moon appear almost exactly the same size in the sky. That allows the Moon to cover the Sun almost perfectly during a total solar eclipse.


Without that incredible bit of cosmic geometry, total solar eclipses wouldn’t exist.


If there’s a new Moon every month, why don’t we get an eclipse every month?


That’s one of the most common questions people ask.


Every month, the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun during the new moon phase. But the Moon’s orbit is tilted by about five degrees compared to Earth’s orbit around the Sun.


Most months, the Moon’s shadow passes just above or below Earth instead of striking it directly.


Only when everything lines up perfectly does a solar eclipse occur.


Sometimes the most spectacular events in nature happen because of the smallest differences.


Why do so few people ever experience totality?


Imagine shining a flashlight across a football field.


The brightest part of the beam covers a huge area, but the darkest spot in the center is surprisingly small.


The Moon casts its shadow the same way.


The darkest part, called the umbra, is usually only about 100 to 120 miles wide. As Earth rotates and the Moon continues its orbit, that tiny shadow races across the planet at speeds that can exceed 1,000 miles per hour.


That’s why totality at any one location usually lasts only two or three minutes.

A huge planet.


An experience many people spend a lifetime chasing.


The universe is putting on a show…just not in our backyard


Most Americans won’t experience darkness in the middle of the day this week.

But millions will still watch livestreams from Spain and Iceland, marvel at breathtaking photographs, and share in one of nature’s rarest spectacles from thousands of miles away.


Maybe that’s the real story.


The sky belongs to all of us, even when the best seat in the house happens to be somewhere else.
